This research report explores the impact of cultural dance and Polyfest participation on the wellbeing, identity, physical activity, and social connectedness of Pasifika youth in Otago and Southland. Drawing on youth voices and lived experiences, the study highlights how cultural performance strengthens confidence, leadership, cultural pride, belonging, and connections between Pacific communities. The report provides valuable insights for festival organisers, educators, community leaders, and policymakers seeking to support positive outcomes for Pasifika youth through culture, movement, and community engagement.
Pacific Youth Connecting through ‘Poly’

This study examines the significant role of school Polynesian Clubs (‘Poly’) in fostering Pacific identity, cultural pride, leadership, and educational achievement among Pasifika youth in Aotearoa New Zealand. Based on interviews and participant observation with senior Samoan and other Pacific students, the research demonstrates how participation in Poly builds brotherhood, discipline, and confidence while strengthening connections to culture and community.
